The Neurofeedback Story

In the late 1960's and 1970's, it was learned that it was possible to retrain brainwave patterns. Some of this work began with training to modify 'alpha' brainwave activity to increase relaxation while other work, originating at the University of California Los Angeles, focused on uncontrolled epilepsy. This brainwave training is called EEG biofeedback or neurofeedback. Since then, a great deal of research has tested the usefulness of brainwave biofeedback for a variety of conditions as well as for peak performance training.

The EEG biofeedback treatment is painless, averages between about 5 to 20 sessions and involves watching a computer screen provide information about the brain's activity, e.g., through watching a video game being played by the client's brainwave activity. Some of the screens Dr. de Jong uses in treatment are on the Training page.

Clients often explore neurotherapy treatment because of the failures of other types of approaches, a low tolerance of medications or philosophical objections to using medications. The basis for using the treatment is very objective, i.e., treatment begins because of unusual levels of brainwave activity.  A listing of published studies of brainwave biofeedback research can be found at and an evaluation of the effectiveness of neurotherapy and biofeedback for different disorders at .

Practitioners of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback can achieve certification through the Biofeedback Certification Association of America . Dr. de Jong is Board Certified in both Neurotherapy and Biofeedback and has experience in neurofeedback, biofeedback and psychotherapy.
